The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook by Martha Davis, Matthew McKay,and Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman This book is a key resource for the practice of Skilled Relaxation. (Fifth Edition, 2000, New Harbinger Publications, Inc.; published continuously since 1980). This is the most effective self-help book to learn a variety of Skilled Relaxation techniques. Earlier editions are also good. This book contains information on the following SR methods: breathing, progressive relaxation, meditation, visualization, applied relaxation training, self-hypnosis, autogenics, recording a relaxation tape, combination techniques, and thought stopping. The fifth edition also includes useful information about body awareness, stress management, coping skills, time management, assertiveness training, and exercise. This latest edition is an example of a book that has been exclusively about the one topic of Skilled Relaxation for 25 years. It recognizes the importance of the 3LS Wellness Program by including short information about diet and exercise. This is a fabulous self-help book.
The Healing Power of Whole Foods by Beth Loiselle, with a foreward by Walt Stoll, M.D. (Healthways Nutrition, 1993). Beth's easy-to-understand and inspirational book is an invaluable resource for those wanting to learn every aspect of the basics of eating and healing through whole foods. It contains information about following the Perfect Whole Foods diet, a liberal Whole Foods Diet, recipes, adapting your diet to address candida, food allergies/sensitivities, the soft diet, and weight loss. It also has references for knowing if foods, additives, and brand name products are included as part of the Perfect Whole Foods Diet.
Fitness for Dummies by Suzanna Schlosbert and Liz Neporent (Wiley, John & Sons, 1999) This is the best exercise book we have seen. This is a great reference book that covers a wide variety of exercise and describes them in detail.
This the the other book by Walt Stoll, MD, which includes some information about the 3LS Wellness Program plus holistic healing. It is a great companion to Recapture Your Health.
Saving Yourself from the Disease-Care Crisis by Walt Stoll, MD (Sunrise Health Coach, 1996). Dr. Stoll's first book contains a wealth of information about holistic healing and offers safe, simple treatments which have been effectively used to relieve suffering and reverse the effects of many of the ills produced by the modern American lifestyle. It also discusses the critical state of health care in America today and asks hard questions about the monopoly of conventional medicine that limits the options available to most consumers of medical services.
The video mentioned below may help many people get started on an exercise program who thought they might not be able to start, because they need an exercise that is very gentle. This video is included in this list because it is hard to find.
