Generally people consult a health care professional because they want to improve their health. Some wish to be free of an illness or set of symptoms, or to resolve pain. Consider also this: according to the World Health Organization, "Health is more than the absence of disease. Health is a state of optimal well-being." Beginning with a wellness consultation, we can plan a strategy for improving your disease condition or chronic illness (without using drugs or surgery), or simply help you move towards a state of optimal, exhilarating well-being.
Most chronic problems have more than one cause or root. Thus, a person on a healing journey may need to use a number of different methods or modalities that cross a wide spectrum. Sometimes healing can be like putting together a puzzle. Each type of treatment or self-care method might provide a different piece to the puzzle, working together toward the resolution of a chronic or complex issue. Using different methods at the same time (taking a holistic approach) can sometimes create a kind of healing "synergy" in which the whole is more than the sum of the parts. In a wellness consultation, we will discuss using different approaches, including self-care methods, to create this synergy. We will work with the body's innate ability for self-healing to enhance your wellness and help you reach your specific goals.
Thus, a wellness consultation can help you learn that you can improve how you are feeling and functioning, and provide a "roadmap" for getting there. Consultations typically range from 1/2 hour to 2 hours.
Curing vs. Healing: In my practice, I promote a holistic approach that embraces both curing (alleviating symptoms) and healing (resolving causes of symptoms). Curing often works on the physical level and can be an important part of healing. Healing may occur on a physical level, too, but may include other connections to the problem. Healing addresses symptoms in a manner that delves to their cause or root. These causes may include such things as lifestyle, environmental influences, current or past emotions, traumatic experiences, or beliefs. Healing may explore what a symptom may be telling you about yourself to help you become more whole and function at a higher level than before. Healing uses inner power and mind/body resources to restore or create a unique balance and harmony resulting in health, vitality and joy. Thus, it may also focus on improving balance and overall well-being without a specific problem being present.
One of the best and most effective forms of healing is self-help or self-care. So much healing can be done by oneself, and I enjoy teaching others how to help themselves. To assist the learning process, instructional books, booklets, or videos are available. Some materials may be purchased, and some are available through the Lending Library.
